The Hautboy

Birchwood has sympathetically restored and converted this wonderful, charismatic Grade II listed, 19th century property and created 7 unique, luxury apartments.

Set in the picturesque village of Ockham, The Hautboy was built in 1864 by William King, 1st Earl of Lovelace, who was both the landowner and the architect. Historically, The Hautboy had been a hotel since 1895 and is well known within the local area for its Chapel Hall on the first floor.

For a local landmark that was made to be loved and enjoyed, Birchwood has given The Hautboy a new life whilst retaining its original, mid-Victorian, architectural structure.

In the 2015 Guildford Design Awards run by Guildford Borough Council, Birchwood Homes were Commended for the restoration and conversion of The Hautboy. A particular mention should be made of the quality of external renovation and provision of garden areas and car parking on an awkward site at a road junction.

Judges’ comments: “A sympathetic restoration of a heritage building, providing residential accommodation in a rural location.”
